Dr. Patrick Ling
Dr. Patrick Ling is the founder of Avant Sports Medicine. He is a pioneer in musculoskeletal ultrasound and the first sports medicine physician in Canada to be credentialled as a musculoskeletal sonographer. He offers both diagnostic MSK US and US guided interventional procedures for non- operative musculoskeletal conditions.
After a decade serving as the Emergency Medicine Residency Director, he returned to study public health at the College of Medicine. Dr. Ling completed a Masters degree in Public Health at the University of Saskatchewan in 2011. He realized that many of the chronic diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease and diabetes that he had managed in the emergency department could be prevented. Many of these conditions could have been prevented with 'upstream' measures such as attention to diet and physical activity.
In 2013, Dr. Ling returned to his first love and started a sports and exercise medicine practice with hopes of helping people maintain their activity; believing that physical activity can treat and prevent most many chronic illness.
He recently launched the Exercise is Medicine campaign at the University of Saskatchewan - bringing awareness of the health benefits of exercise and partnering with the college of kinesiology to provide timely exercise counseling and support to those who may benefit from an exercise prescription.
Dr. Patrick Ling completed medical school at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and then completed family medicine residency in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He obtained special competency in emergency medicine through the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP-EM) and served as the emergency medicine program director at the University of Saskatchewan for 10 years. During his emergency medicine practice, he realized the incredible potential ultrasound for improving patient care. He completed a visiting fellowship in diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal sonography at Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA. Dr. Patrick Ling is the first physician in Canada to obtain credential in musculoskeletal ultrasound (RMSK) and is recognized as a pioneer in MSK US by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Dr. Ling was awarded a Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine by the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM).
Dr. Ling founded Avant Sports Medicine with the vision to establish a new standard for sports and exercise medicine in Canada.
